1. Use audio tapes, video tapes, and self help books to get you through the quitting process. They will help keep you motivated and provide you with a variety of strategies to quit smoking. By completing the Smoker Survey you will receive a comprehensive Stop Smoking Audio Program.
  2. Wear a rubber band on your wrist and each time the urge to smoke hits, snap the rubber band. Make sure the rubber band isn't too tight. This technique will make you more conscious of your smoking behavior.
  3. Participate in other healthy behaviors like eating healthy, exercising and managing stress.
  4. Keep your hands busy. Work on a puzzle, other arts and crafts, read a book or garden. By keeping your hands and yourself busy you will not miss the feel of cigarettes in you hand as much.
  5. Engage in nonsmoking activities when you have an urge to smoke. One successful quitter completed household chores instead of smoking and another took showers.
  6. Have nonsmoking friends make you a tape in which they provide encouragement for you to quit. Listen to the tape each day or as often as necessary.
